NAMIBIA'S HIMBA TRIBE: INTERESTING FACTS

The Himba tribe from southern Africa is one of the most fascinating tribes that has captured our attention recently. They are known as the "Ovahimba" or "OmuHimba" tribe and are located in a few camps that are open to visitors. Visit Serra Cafena, Kunene, Epupa, Grootbert, and Opuwo to see this African tribe that is known for its friendliest demeanor.

The majority of Himba men are polygamists, with an average of two wives. All marriages are arranged by parents, who also choose the partner and set the bride price. Although this custom is not followed in the Himba tribe, it is common in many other African tribes where marriage is seen as an adult decision. They honor the god Mukuru, who is associated with their forefathers.

Because of their custom known as "Okujesipa Omukazendu," which involves giving someone's wife to a guest for sex as a sign of greeting and hospitality, the Himba people have left others in wonder. Additionally, they believe that this signifies blessings and hospitality and that the husband must wait while the guest is having sex because the person whose wife sleeps with a stranger is lucky.

We continue to be perplexed by the fact that this tribe's members dress in clothing made of sheepskin and cowskin and dye their hair red mud. This haircut is thought to be a means of displaying one's riches, position, and marital status.

They don't take baths as frequently as other people do, but they do use smoke and red ochre on their skin.
